Chronograph Watches in Kenya (2026): Prices, Best Picks and How to Use One
By Robert · · 10 min read
If you are shopping for chronograph watches in Kenya, you have probably noticed that almost every men's watch in the KSh 2,000 to KSh 8,000 range seems to have little dials on its face. Some of those dials are a working stopwatch, and some are just decoration. This guide is for anyone who likes the chronograph look and wants to buy one that does the job. You will learn what a chronograph is, how to use one, how to check the sub-dials before you pay, what they cost in Kenya today, and our picks from KSh 2,000.
What is a chronograph watch?
A chronograph is a watch with a built-in stopwatch. On top of telling the time, it can time an event, such as a run, a match or a cooking time, and show you how long it took.
You can usually spot one by three things:
- Two pushers beside the crown, one above it (start/stop) and one below it (reset).
- Sub-dials, the small dials on the face that count elapsed seconds, minutes and sometimes hours.
- A long central seconds hand that only moves when the stopwatch is running.
Most affordable chronographs sold in Kenya run on a battery-powered quartz movement. A few automatic watches also come with chronograph-style dials. If you are not sure which type suits you, our guide to automatic vs quartz watches explains the difference.
Chronograph vs chronometer: are they the same?
No, although the names sound alike. A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function. A chronometer is a watch that has passed an official accuracy test, such as the Swiss COSC certification. A watch can be one, both or neither. The chronographs in this guide are not certified chronometers, and none of the product pages claim to be.
How to use a chronograph watch
The layout varies between models, but most quartz chronographs work the same way:
- Check that everything is at zero. The central seconds hand should point at 12 and the stopwatch sub-dials should read zero. If not, press the bottom pusher to reset.
- Press the top pusher to start. The central seconds hand starts sweeping and the minute sub-dial begins counting.
- Press the top pusher again to stop. Read the time: the minutes from the sub-dial, the seconds from the central hand.
- Press the bottom pusher to reset everything back to zero.
On many models you can press the top pusher again before resetting to carry on timing from where you stopped, which is handy for timing laps or pauses. Timex has a clear illustrated guide to using a chronograph if you want to see the steps with diagrams.
Why isn't the big seconds hand moving?
This catches out many new owners. On a chronograph, the long central hand belongs to the stopwatch, so it sits still at 12 until you start timing. The watch's normal running seconds are usually shown on one of the small sub-dials instead. If that small hand is moving, your watch is working.
When not to press the pushers
Most watches in this price range are rated 3 ATM (30 m), which handles rain, splashes and hand washing. Pressing the pushers while the watch is wet can let water in past the seals, so only use the stopwatch with dry hands and never in the rain or in water. Our guide to watch water resistance explains what each rating really means.
Working sub-dials vs decorative ones: what to check before you buy
Here is the honest part that most listings skip. Not every watch with three small dials is a chronograph. On many fashion watches the sub-dials show the day of the week, the date or a 24-hour indicator instead of stopwatch time. Those are useful, but they won't time anything. On some very cheap watches the sub-dials are printed on and do nothing at all.
Before you buy, check three things:
- The product description. Look for wording such as "functional chronograph", "active sub-dials" or "working sub-dials". Every chronograph we recommend below says this on its product page.
- The pushers. A real chronograph has pushers that start and stop the central seconds hand. Buttons that only set the day and date are a sign of a multifunction watch, not a stopwatch.
- The sub-dial markings. Stopwatch sub-dials are marked 0 to 30 or 0 to 60. Dials marked 1 to 31, Monday to Sunday, or 24 hours are calendar dials.
Buying online and not sure? Ask on WhatsApp before you order and we will tell you exactly what each sub-dial on that model does.

Best statement chronograph: Skmei 2682 (KSh 5,499)
The Skmei 2682 has an angular octagonal bezel, a six-hand chronograph display, a Japanese quartz movement (as listed on the product page), luminous hands, a date window between 4 and 5 o'clock and a stainless steel band. It is listed as unisex and works well with a suit.
Want an automatic instead?
If you would rather never change a battery, the Poedagar 1418 Automatic (KSh 7,499) is a self-winding watch with chronograph-style dials plus day, date and month displays. An automatic needs regular wear to keep running, so read our automatic vs quartz guide before you choose.
Caring for a chronograph in Nairobi
A few simple habits will keep your chronograph working for years:
- Don't leave the stopwatch running. On a quartz chronograph, running the stopwatch uses extra battery power. Stop and reset it when you are done.
- Keep the pushers dry. Nairobi's long rains (March to May) and short rains (October to December) are when most water damage happens. Avoid pressing pushers in the rain, and wipe the watch dry before you take it off.
- Clean around the pushers. Dust and sweat can build up around the buttons and make them stiff. Our guide on how to clean a watch at home covers this.
- Replace the battery promptly. A dead battery left inside can leak. On many quartz watches, a second hand that starts jumping in 2 or 4 second steps means it is time for a battery replacement.
If a pusher sticks, the hands don't return to zero, or fog appears under the glass, bring the watch to our watch repairs service in Nairobi rather than forcing it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a chronograph watch worth it?
Yes, if you like the look or will actually time things such as workouts or cooking. A chronograph costs a little more than a plain watch and has more parts to look after, but the extra cost is small. If you only want the time and date, a simple watch is easier to live with.
Do chronograph watches need batteries?
Most affordable chronographs in Kenya use quartz movements, so yes, they run on a battery that typically needs changing every one to two years. Leaving the stopwatch running shortens battery life. Automatic watches with chronograph-style dials, like the Poedagar 1418 Automatic, wind themselves as you wear them and need no battery.
Can I swim with a chronograph watch?
Not with the watches in this guide. They are rated around 3 ATM (30 m), which covers rain, splashes and hand washing, not swimming or showering. Never press the chronograph pushers when the watch is wet, because water can get past the seals. For swimming, you need a watch rated at least 10 ATM.
What is the difference between a chronograph and a chronometer?
A chronograph is a watch with a stopwatch function, shown by pushers and sub-dials. A chronometer is a watch certified for high accuracy by an official testing body, such as COSC in Switzerland. The two terms are unrelated: a chronograph is not automatically a chronometer, and a chronometer may not have a stopwatch at all.
How do I know if the sub-dials on a watch actually work?
Read the product description for "functional" or "working" chronograph, then press the top pusher: the central seconds hand should start moving. Stopwatch sub-dials are marked 0 to 30 or 0 to 60, while day, date and 24-hour dials are calendar displays. If you are buying online, ask the seller to confirm.
