Why Is My Watch Leaving a Green Mark on My Wrist? Causes and Fixes

Casio Dualtime analog-digital watch with a green cloth strap worn on a wrist

If your watch is leaving a green mark on your wrist, you are not alone, and in most cases it is harmless and easy to fix. This guide is for anyone who has taken off a watch to find a green, black or red mark underneath. You will learn what causes each kind of mark, which ones are just a stain and which might be an allergy, and simple steps to stop it happening, especially in Kenya's heat, where sweat makes the problem worse.

Why does a watch leave a green mark?

A green mark is almost always caused by copper. Many watch cases, case backs, clasps and bracelet parts are made from alloys that contain copper, often under a layer of plating. When sweat, moisture or soap sits against that metal, the copper reacts and forms green compounds that rub off onto your skin.

You are more likely to see it when:

The good news: the green colour is a stain on the skin, not damage to it. It washes off with soap and water.

What about black or grey marks?

A dark grey or black mark usually comes from tiny metal particles and tarnish rubbing off the watch onto your skin. Some people notice it more when they wear moisturiser, sunscreen or makeup, which can act like a mild polish against the metal. Like a green mark, it washes off and is not harmful in itself. Cleaning the watch and your wrist regularly is usually enough to stop it.

Red, itchy skin: when it might be an allergy

A coloured mark is one thing. A red, itchy, bumpy or flaky rash under the watch is different.

The most common cause of a rash under a watch is nickel allergy, a type of contact dermatitis. Nickel is used in many metal alloys and plating, and the US National Library of Medicine notes that nickel dermatitis can appear on the wrist from the back of a watch.

A rash can also come from simple irritation: sweat, soap or water trapped under a tight strap for hours.

If you get a rash:

How to stop your watch leaving marks on your wrist

Most people can stop green and black marks with a few habits:

  1. Keep your wrist and watch dry. Wipe your watch after a sweaty day and dry your wrist before putting it back on.
  2. Clean the watch regularly. Wipe the case back and clasp with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, then dry thoroughly. Our guide on how to clean a watch at home explains how to do this safely for every strap type.
  3. Wear it a little looser. You should be able to slide one finger under the strap. Air flow helps sweat evaporate. See our guide on how to wear a watch for the right fit.
  4. Take it off at night, and before showering, swimming or exercising.
  5. Let lotion and sunscreen dry before you put your watch on.
  6. Add a barrier, as a temporary fix. Some people paint a thin layer of clear nail polish on the parts of the case back that touch the skin. It wears off and needs reapplying, and you must keep it away from the crown, buttons and the seams of the case.

Change to a strap that doesn't touch metal

If the mark appears where the bracelet or clasp touches your wrist, a non-metal strap removes most of the metal contact. Leather, fabric and silicone straps are all good options. Remember the case back still touches your skin, so keep that clean and dry too.

Frequently asked questions

Is a green mark from a watch harmful?

Usually not. The green colour comes from copper in the watch metal reacting with sweat. It stains the skin's surface and washes off with soap and water. If the skin underneath is red, itchy, swollen or blistered, that is a different problem, possibly an allergy, and you should take the watch off and see a doctor or pharmacist.

How do I remove the green mark from my skin?

Wash your wrist with soap and warm water and dry it well. Most green marks come off straight away. To stop them returning, clean and dry the watch's case back and clasp, wear the watch slightly looser, and take it off at night and before exercise. A non-metal strap also reduces contact with the metal.

Why is my watch suddenly turning my wrist green?

Usually because something has changed: hotter weather, more sweating, a new lotion, or the watch's plating wearing thin where it rubs your skin. Once the base metal underneath is exposed, it reacts with moisture more easily. Cleaning the watch, keeping your wrist dry and switching to a leather, fabric or silicone strap usually solves it.

Why does my watch leave a black mark on my wrist?

Black or grey marks are usually tiny particles of metal and tarnish rubbing off onto your skin. Lotions, sunscreen and sweat can make it more noticeable. The mark washes off and is not harmful in itself. Wipe the case back and bracelet regularly, let lotion dry before wearing your watch, and keep the watch dry.
